Description

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), in collaboration with members of the Zambia Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZVAC), conducts an in-depth Vulnerability and Needs Assessment every year after each rainy season. The ZVAC is a technical committee in charge of carrying out vulnerability and needs assessments (i.e., disaster-related assessments that inform disaster preparedness, prevention, mitigation, response, and recovery), and its membership is drawn from different institutions, including government ministries and departments, the UN system, NGOs (local and international), and the private sector. To understand the impact of shocks (i.e., disasters/ hazards) experienced during the 2024/2025 rainy season, an In-depth Vulnerability and Needs Assessment (IDVNA) was conducted. The assessment made it easier to understand how the different communities were affected by the shocks they experienced. The goal of the 2024–2025 IDVNA was to determine the short-term requirements of shock-affected households and communities in order to rebuild livelihoods and return to regular life functioning. The assessment was carried out in 71 districts.
